The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard," was officially designated as the U.S. Army's ceremonial unit on April 6, 1948. Since then, The Old Guard has been responsible for guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, establishing it as the home of the Sentinels who vigilantly protect this revered monument. In addition to its duties at the Tomb, The Old Guard performs all U.S. Army funeral ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, upholding the highest standards of honor and respect in commemorating the nation’s fallen Service Members.
